Richloam WMA
« on: May 29, 2009, 12:02:40 PM »
This thread is to discuss and post photos of Richloam WMA (wildlife management area) located just east of Ridge Manor, FL. It contains 58,146 acres of forest roads containing sand, hard pack, mud and most of the time, water logged roads here and there.

I've spent the last year exploring this area with my dual sport motorcycle and now that I have a Jeep, it will be equally as fun. If not more because the whole family can come along.

As this is a hunting area, be curteous of those around you and familiarize yourself with the rules. You can find Richloam's full brochure here: http://myfwc.com/recreation/Hunt_WMABrochs_LastSeason.htm

My daughter is 7 and my son is 3. And yes, more kids means more fun for them! We should plan something!

This is a nice trail along the train tracks. FR1

Hard to believe I made it through here on the Jeep without a scratch. It was tight.

This is how most of the larger roads look like.

Any area with Cypress trees is flooded now. I'll get some photos of that next time.

I'm not sure, I'll have to check into that later. It's pretty close to the interstate so there is a Hotel close by as an alternative to camping.

I went to Richloam yesterday. It is wet every where and getting wetter every day. I prefer dry soft sand myself (with a some mud here and there), but if you love water and mud, take a trip.

The mosquitos are getting almost unbearable. You can't stop for more than 10 seconds before getting swarmed. Some of them are the size of nickels! I've never seen mosquitos so big! The main roads are getting really choppy, too from all the rain.

The below photo is from the one spot that connect Akins Rd to Boggey on the north side east of hwy 50. I was swarmed by about 1000 skeeters  during the 30 seconds it took to take the pic. Yikes! My rigs is not equipped for this, I turned around.

There's a black dog running around there, too. He has a collar and seemed to be playing with us. He followed us the whole way around there. He then disappeared and we thought we left him behind only to find him waiting for us on the way out on New River Rd. He knows the area better than I do for sure.

The only camping in Richloam is during hunting season and its for the hunters. It's Very primitave....and you Sure dont want to camp there during hunting season!!
There are several hotels withing 5-10 miles with decent size lots for trailers if you need to trailer your rig, but nothing really close to Richloam to camp at unless you go to the Sertoma Youth Ranch outside of Dade City off exit 293 of I-75.
There are some organized rides from 3 to 15 jeepers who regularly go out there, so if anyone wants to go just post up  ;)
